The Second and Final Photo Session: Bringing My Fashion Magazine Vision to Life

Today marked the end of an incredible journey—the second and final photo session for my A Levels media studies project, where I’ve been creating a fashion magazine from scratch. This session was the culmination of weeks of planning, refining ideas, and pushing myself to create something visually compelling and professional.

Planning and Concept

The concept for this session was all about building on the foundation I’d established earlier in the project while taking things to the next level. I wanted every shot to feel purposeful and striking, something that would captivate the reader’s attention and make them linger over the details.

Before the shoot, I sketched out ideas for compositions, poses, and lighting. I envisioned dynamic shots that showcased personality and style, balancing close-ups with wider, more dramatic frames. This time, I
wanted to experiment more, exploring new angles, lighting techniques, and ways of incorporating the background into the narrative of each photo.

The Location and Setup

The location I chose for this session played a crucial role in shaping the mood of the photos. I opted for a studio setting, which offered a textured, versatile backdrop. The space allowed me to play with elements like shadows, depth, and scale.

The equipment I used included Nikon Z8, along with additional tools like tripods, reflectors, and lighting kits. I experimented with both natural and artificial lighting to create different effects, ensuring every shot felt intentional and polished.

The Models and Styling

The models I worked with were styled to reflect a cohesive vision while also showcasing individuality. I wanted their outfits to stand out but also work harmoniously with the location and overall tone of the magazine.

The styling focused on bold yet refined choices:

• Some models wore layered outfits that played with texture and structure, such as oversized coats paired with sleek silhouettes.
• Others showcased statement pieces, like vibrant patterns or unique accessories, that immediately drew the eye.

Makeup and hair were kept minimal yet striking, with details like slicked-back hair, bold lip colors, or dewy skin to enhance the editorial feel. The goal was to let the styling complement the poses and expressions without overpowering the image.

Challenges and Highlights

Like any creative endeavor, this session had its challenges. For one, working with unpredictable lighting at times made it tricky to get the perfect shot. I had to adapt quickly, repositioning models or using props to reflect light in ways that enhanced the composition.

Another challenge was time management—coordinating multiple models, outfits, and setups within a limited timeframe required constant focus and energy. However, these challenges also pushed me to think creatively and problem-solve on the go, which made the final results even more rewarding.

There were also moments of pure magic during the shoot. One standout moment was when the light hit the model’s face just right, creating a golden glow that added an unexpected warmth to the shot. Another was capturing spontaneous, candid moments that felt authentic and full of energy.

Reflection and Next Steps

This session brought everything full circle. It’s been an incredible learning experience, and I feel like I’ve grown so much—not just in technical skills but in confidence as well. I’ve learned how to plan effectively, direct models, and adapt to challenges while staying true to my creative vision.

Now that the photo sessions are complete, the next step is editing and curating the images to fit the magazine layout. This will involve fine-tuning colors, cropping, and ensuring the photos flow seamlessly with the text and overall design. It’s the final stretch, and I’m excited to see the magazine come together as a finished product.

This second photo session was not just a task to tick off—it was an experience that deepened my love for photography and storytelling.
